Crystal Purification: How To Clean Crystals and Stones

It’s easy to get excited about crystal healing and want to skip right to putting it into practice. However, when you do that, you miss out on one of the most important steps—crystal purification. Next to connecting with your crystals personally, Home of Chiji believes crystal purification can make or break your crystal work.

Learning how to clean crystals can give you a blank, neutral slate to work with and stop old energy and vibes from bleeding into your current work. Here’s how you can clean your own stones and crystals.

Why Should You Clean Your Crystals?

Although we don’t often think about inanimate objects having energy, they are just as likely (if not more likely) than sentient objects to pick it up. Crystals are very similar to sponges, soaking up the energy around them.

When you think about all of the steps it takes to get a crystal from the mine to your hands, there are multiple areas for them to draw from. The technology used during the processing stage can also pass its energy to the crystals so, by the time it reaches you, it’s likely full of energy you don’t want.

You can strip away all of that excess, unintended energy when you know how to clean crystals. That way, you won’t have any vibes (positive or negative) interacting with the intention that you hope to achieve with your crystal healing.

Methods To Clean Your Crystals

Do you have your crystals, and are you ready to learn how to clean them? You can use various methods, and you may want to try a few different options to find out what works best for you.

How To Clean Crystals With the Moon

Cleansing your crystals using the power of the moon is one of the easiest and most ancient ways to do it. The first thing you’ll want to pay attention to is the moon’s cycle and what specific phase it may be in. For cleansing purposes, it’s best to work during either the full or the new moon.

Full moon cleansing is excellent for crystals you’re planning on using to let go or move on from something, while new moon cleansing is excellent for new beginnings. All you need to do is place them either outside or on a windowsill for at least 24 hours, preferably in the middle of whichever phase you’ve chosen.

Cleanse With Mother Earth

If you feel more connected to the earth than to the moon, you can use it to cleanse your crystals instead. If you’re using a single stone, you can bury it in the ground for 24 hours. If it is more porous, or if you would prefer to keep your stones clean, wrap it in a simple cloth before you put it in the earth.

Use Rice

Have you ever had a piece of technology that has gotten wet and needed to soak in rice to dry it out? You can apply the same premise to cleansing your crystals.

When you place your crystals in a bowl and fill it with rice, it can also pull out any negative energy. Like the other forms of cleansing, allow it to sit for 24 hours and make sure that you dispose of the rice afterward.

Cleanse With Reiki

If you are a reiki practitioner, you can use your training to cleanse your crystals as well. Reiki is a technique that involves harnessing and directing the flow of “life energy.”

While it is usually performed on people, simply holding your crystal in your hand and directing reiki energy toward it is a valuable and efficient cleansing tool. As an added benefit, you don’t have to wait to use your crystals as you do with the other cleansing techniques.

How To Clean Crystals With Water

Learning how to clean crystals with water deserves a separate discussion, as not every crystal is considered water safe. Stones that are softer to the touch or that flake easily may not hold up to water, and those with a high metal content may actually rust or even turn toxic. Before using water to cleanse your stones, do some research and ensure that it is safe to do so.

A shortlist of some crystals that are generally considered to be water-safe includes:

  • Agate
  • Amethyst
  • Aventurine
  • Clear quartz
  • Citrine
  • Red Jasper
  • Rose quartz
  • Smokey quartz
  • Tiger Eye

To use water to cleanse your crystals, you can either hold them under running water (use purified water, not tap water). If you prefer to use salt water, you can add some to your water before you pour it. It’s not recommended to soak your crystals in water, though, especially if you’ve added salt.

Programming Your Crystals

Once your crystals are cleansed and ready to use, one final step you’ll want to take is to program them. While this isn’t absolutely necessary, it can help if you have a set goal in mind (check out our crystal sets for ideas, like Peace + Positive Vibes or Protection + Evil Eye).

To program your crystals, just hold them in the palm of your hand individually. Focus your intentions on that crystal, feeling it as deeply as you can. Some people choose to state their intention out loud, but it isn’t necessary. You may want to repeat it several times, at least until you can feel your intention in the crystal.

In Summary

Knowing how to clean crystals and stones is an essential part of successful crystal healing. It’s critical to start with a clean, blank slate before you attempt to imbue crystals with your own energy. Whether you start with one of our crystal sets or source your own crystals separately, beginning with neutral energy helps you be as successful as possible.

Don’t get in your own way and accidentally derail your work before you’ve even started. With the simple routines we’ve shown you, just 24 hours can make a world of difference.
