How To Identify the Signs of Negative Energy in a Person

Have you ever been around someone that just gave you bad vibes? How many times did your gut instinct turn out to be correct?

Learning how to access your intuition, and recognizing the signs of negative energy in a person, can save you heartache and frustration. Negative energy is real, even though you can’t physically see it. Home of Chiji is here to help you identify it so that you can avoid people who may bring it into your life.

Life is stressful enough, so don’t waste one more second of your time on anything that doesn’t serve you. If you have negativity in your life, we want to help you learn to cleanse yourself. We never know how long we have, so spend the time you get being a force for good.

Signs of Negative Energy

Although it can be easy to label situations or people as having “bad energy,” not everything falls into that category. Choosing to avoid certain people or even cut someone out of your life is a big deal. You don’t want to make that decision lightly because it can lead to regret down the line.

To help, here are a few of the more reliable signs you should stay away from someone.

Blaming Others

Blame is one of the most destructive things that a person can do, although it doesn’t get as much attention as anger or judgment. The reason for that is twofold.

First and foremost, when you blame others, you do not own any of your power and responsibility. Think about it—it’s much easier to say that something didn’t work out because it was someone else’s fault than to look at how your actions may have influenced the situation. Pointing the finger is easy; using a situation as a way to grow is much more difficult.

Second, there’s a lot of negative energy that surrounds finger-pointing. Who wants to be around someone who will throw them under the bus at a moment’s notice? They’re just not positive, empowering, supportive people to spend time around. Plus, you’ll probably find yourself feeling on guard when you’re with them, which removes the potential for true intimacy.

Frequent Complaining

Another of the common signs of negative energy in a person is that you notice that they are frequently complaining. Often, this can even be an unconscious behavior instead of something purposefully mean-spirited. The result is the same, though.

Negative people often attract other negative people. In addition, negative people tend to “infect” the people around them with their stress and negativity. It doesn’t feel good to be around, and research has even shown that it can physically damage the brain.

That’s not to say that some complaining isn’t acceptable or even good for you. The key is to look for the people that always have more bad to say than good. If you’re a naturally optimistic person, you may find pessimistic people flock to your positivity.

That is a little bit like a moth to a flame, but be careful. Psychic vampires are out there, and they love to just drain the joy right out of you for their benefit.

Criticizing Others

In the same vein, criticizing others is one of the signs you should stay away from someone. If someone is willing to criticize other people in front of you, they’re just as likely to criticize you in front of other people.

Ultimately, you can never truly know what someone else is going through. Passing judgment on a person, especially if you don’t know them personally, often comes from negativity and a lack of self-esteem. It’s much more difficult to put yourself in someone else’s shoes, but doing that is how you develop true empathy.

Feeling Comfortable in Chaos

Negativity thrives in chaos. It’s much harder to be negative when everything around you is in order. While that’s like the chicken and the egg metaphor, you’ll likely notice that the more pessimistic people in your life also live in cluttered environments.

Although extreme, a perfect example of this is hoarding disorder. People who deal with this mental health issue aren’t just naturally messy; their home environment directly represents the struggles going on inside their heads. That’s not to say that all people who hoard are negative, but just to show you how much your mind can manifest itself in the material things around you.

How To Cleanse Negative Energy

If you’ve identified any signs of negative energy in a person in others (or even in yourself), what can you do? We have a few tips on how you can cleanse negative energy from both your space and yourself so that you can get back to being the optimistic person you are meant to be.

Stay Mindful

You can’t fix other people, no matter how much you try. Other people’s negativity and general attitudes toward life are not your responsibility. That seems like a simple statement, but it’s much harder to put into practice.

An excellent way to start focusing on yourself and becoming more aware of your feelings and thoughts is to practice mindfulness. If you’re unfamiliar with the concept, mindfulness is the ability to maintain an awareness of ourselves on a moment-to-moment basis. That awareness isn’t just how you feel; it’s also about what your body is doing and what the world around you is doing.

Most people work on mindfulness by establishing a meditation practice. To benefit from meditation, you don’t have to sit in quiet contemplation for hours at a time, seven days a week. Even a few minutes, just a few days a week can help you learn how to redirect your thoughts away from negativity.

Use Crystals

An easy way to help rid your physical space of negativity, especially if you’ve recently been visited by someone who just tends to leave bad vibes behind, is to use crystals

All crystals hold powerfully unique energy. It may take some time and experimentation for you to find the right crystals that work for you, but hang in there! Once you identify the best crystals, you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it before.

To help, we created our Positive Vibes Crystal Energy Candle. Simply burn this candle in your space when you feel the need for a boost of positive energy. Every candle is made with 100% clean-burning natural soy wax, infused with ethically sourced miniature crystals. Each of our candles features crystals known for that specific use, and this candle includes purple/green fluorite, clear quartz, and amethyst.

Declutter Your Space

While that candle is burning, why not take a little time to declutter your space?

Negativity is infectious, and so is clutter. If you’re already finding yourself in a negative headspace, keeping your physical space clean can be challenging. Unfortunately, this can turn into a vicious cycle.

You don’t have to clean your entire house, though. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, focus your energy on just tackling one small project that you’ve been putting off. Try cleaning out your junk drawer or just getting the dishes done. You’ll find that, once you’ve gotten started, you’ll want to keep going. Plus, you’ll have a cleaner, more organized home and mind.

Set Boundaries

We saved the most challenging way to counteract the signs of negative energy in a person for last.

If a person in your life is constantly bringing you down with their negativity, you are well within your rights to set healthy boundaries with them. That can be difficult to do, especially at first, but it’s worth it.

The first way to set boundaries is by learning to say “no.” So many of us find it hard to do that because we’re worried about hurting someone’s feelings. Unfortunately, that often means that you’re the one who ends up hurt, which just isn’t fair. Saying no doesn’t have to be mean, but it does have to be firm.

Another way to set and hold boundaries is by keeping a journal. Writing down how you feel after you spend time with people is a great reminder that your feelings are valid. Journaling also offers a way to release your own negativity so it doesn’t grow into something more detrimental.

Don’t Let the Negativity Bring You Down

The signs of negative energy in a person may not always be obvious. However, when you know what to look for, it helps you avoid those types of people in the future. Working on cleansing yourself and your space of negativity is also essential so that you don’t let someone else’s pessimism impact your beautiful, natural positivity.
