How to Find Your Sun Sign

Before talking about what your sun sign represents and what it can tell you about your personality, you have to first know your sun sign! So how can you find it?

One of the easiest ways to find your sun sign is to look up one of the many different astrological calculators that are available on the internet. Or, if you prefer to do it a little more old school, you can purchase an astrology book that comes with the charts and graphs you’ll need to do it yourself. In either case, you’ll need a few pieces of information before you can calculate it accurately.

First, and most obviously, you’ll need to know the date that you were born. This includes not only the month and day, but also the year. You’ll also want to find the exact time that you were born, as well as the city and state. While you can find your sun sign without it, having it allows you to more specifically hone in on what exactly was going on in the sky at the precise moment of your birth.

In addition, if you want to dig further into your natal chart, having your birth time is essential. It can’t be calculated without it. Even a minute or two one way or another can alter your sun sign and any number of other alignments that make you the unique, wonderful person that you are.

We’ll give you a second to go ahead and find your sun sign, and then we’ll walk you through exactly how to read it!

What Does Your Sun Sign Mean?

When people refer to your horoscope or your astrological sign, what they’re really referring to is your sun sign. You’re likely really familiar with these signs, and we’ll dig into each of them a little deeper in a second.

Think of your sun sign as the nucleus that helps to form the basics of your personality. Much like the Earth revolves around the sun, the rest of the planets in your chart revolve around your sun sign. It’s the foundation of your natal chart.

However, as important as your sun sign is and as much as it can impact the way you react, it doesn’t actually describe your behavior. Your sun sign is more about values that you hold the most precious and the ways in which those direct your life. To sum it up succinctly, your sun sign is the “I am” of your personality.

The Twelve Sun Signs

The twelve sun signs, in Western astrology at least, are divided up by exactly where the sun was located at the time of birth. They are just under a month each (making up the full time it takes the earth to revolve around the sun), and each has its own name and representative symbol. Each of them is also associated with specific crystals, much like birthday months. The sun signs are also divided up into different categories. For instance, each sign fits into one of four elements - earth, air, fire, or water.

Earth signs are seen as grounded and down to earth, while air signs are social, intelligent, and friendly. Fire signs, on the other hand, are considered fiery, passionate, and creative, and water signs, sensitive, reserved, and shy.

Sun signs don’t officially start in January, either, as you might expect. The very first sign in the zodiac actually starts in March. Here is a brief overview of each of the sun signs, the date range that they are associated with, and a few identifying characteristics.

Aries, or The Ram (March 21st - April 19th)

Aries are known for being bold, eager, and competitive. They are a fire sign. Much like their position as the first sign in the Western zodiac, Aries love coming out on top. They also love a good challenge and can be fairly stubborn when it comes to reaching their goals.

Taurus, or The Bull (April 20th - May 20th)

Taurus is an earth sign, and they are said to be strong, dependable, and creative. This sign is comprised of a group of people who, much like their namesake, are at their happiest when they are in a serene, calm environment.

Gemini, or The Twins (May 21st - June 20th)

Gemini is an air sign, often described as loyal, analytical, and gentle. They are called the “twins” because many people describe them as having split personalities. However, in most cases, both sides are focused on the same goal (although it may be in slightly different ways).

Cancer, or The Crab (June 21st - July 22nd)

A water sign, cancer is most frequently described as intuitive, protective, and compassionate. Think of crabs - just as comfortable on the land as they are in the water. Cancers are a lot like that, comfortable living in both the mental and the physical world. They’re also well known for being able to pick up vibes.

Leo, or The Lion (July 23rd - August 22nd)

Leos are fire signs, known for being dramatic, self-assured, and outgoing. Much like lions, Leos like to be noticed and often want to be the center of attention. They are outgoing and passionate, but they are equally as loyal and stable. You can be sure that Leos will always have your back.

Virgo, or The Virgin (August 23rd - September 22nd)

Practical, gentle, and organized, Virgos are an earth sign. That means that they are incredibly grounded in the real world and have much more trouble with the emotional side of things. Unfortunately, part of that is a tendency to perfectionism, which is a hard habit to break.

Libra, or The Scales (September 23rd - October 22nd)

Libras are an air sign, described as diplomatic, social, and fair. They are the only sun sign in the zodiac that isn’t represented by a living thing and tend to be very focused on trying to receive balance in everything they possibly can. Equilibrium and harmony are very important to the Libra, which can also make decision making tricky

Scorpio, or The Scorpion (October 23rd - November 21st)

Scorpio is actually a water sign, known for being stubborn, brave, and resourceful. That dichotomy explains a lot about this sun sign, as they are frequently misunderstood. While Scorpio is often mistaken for being a fire sign, it is their focus on the emotional, psychic realm that identifies them as a water sign.

Sagittarius, or The Archer (November 22nd - December 21st)

Optimistic, funny, and extroverted, Sagittarius fall into the fire sign category. The Sagittarius is always drawn toward gaining more knowledge, no matter what area that occurs in. They want to know everything there is to know and are incredibly determined in their quest to find it.

Capricorn, or The Goat (December 22nd - January 19th)

Capricorns are earth signs, described as disciplined, tenacious, and independent. While Capricorns are often described as a goat, but they are drawn as having a fishtail as well. It’s a great physical representation of how Capricorns are incredibly adept at living in both the physical and emotional world.

Aquarius, or The Water Bearer (January 20th - February 18th)

Aquarius are deep, uncompromising, and imaginative air signs. That may surprise some people, who think of them as water signs! The Aquarius is possibly the most humanitarian of all of the sun signs, although they tend to put a lot of thought in before acting.

Pisces, or The Fish (February 19th - March 20th)

Empathetic, sensitive, and kind, Pisces are the final sign in the water category. They are symbolized by two fish, each of which is swimming in a different direction. That represents the pull between the physical and emotional but, because Pisces is the final sign in the horoscope, they have absorbed all of those lessons and can see the whole picture.

Once you’ve learned more about your sun sign, you can go even deeper into your natal chart.
